GUTGAA Meet and Greet

Hello fellow GUTGAA bloggers! Allow Me To Introduce Myself. I’m Becka, and I write New Adult and Young Adult Fantasy and Magical Realism (and one contemporary YA that snuck in somehow). For the blogfest I’ll be pitching The Nameless Warrior, a New Adult Fantasy about twin sisters. I’m a nuclear chemist in Charleston, SC, and I’m obsessed with custom My Little Ponies (scroll down – I recently posted a Hunger Games pony, and a Dr Who pony). You’ll find out even more by following the introduction link. And now for the GUTGAA questions:
-Where do you write? I write anywhere and everywhere I can. My other obsession is sticky notes, and I carry them everywhere so I can constantly jot down ideas and bits of dialogue. I write by hand, so I’m not a slave to a power outlet ;)
-Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see? A wine glass. An empty wine glass.
-Favorite time to write? Late at night. I’m no good early in the morning, but anytime after 10am you can find me with pen in hand. Anytime after 10pm you can find me with a pen in one hand and a wine glass in the other.
-Drink of choice while writing? If you haven’t guessed yet, it’s wine ;)
-When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence? Fight scenes require music – I choreograph all of my fight scenes to songs. Any other scene I can take or leave the music, but I do like to have it on in the background.
-What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it? The last new thing I wrote was Book of Souls, and the inspiration came from my pondering on reincarnation and whether I’d rather be able to remember my last life or not (I’ve since decided I’m very happy I cannot remember my past lives, because I would end up trying to be the same person each time).
-What’s your most valuable writing tip? Keep sticky notes with you at all times. You never know when inspiration will strike, and they’re sticky, so they’re hard to lose ;) Back when I was a ML for NaNo I gave my Wrimos a pad of sticky notes every year. Those things are invaluable.
I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me. I can’t wait to meet you all on your own blogs!

I save the wine for after the writing – though blogging when tipsy is a whole lot of fun!

  2. Rich B. Knight Says:

I drink wine when I write, too. Mostly mead, actually. Nice to meet you.

  3. kiperoo Says:

Love your responses! I’m mostly a coffee-writer since I prefer to write in the mornings, but I definitely write with wine at times. I also really like having something to write with on me. I try to carry a small notebook everywhere just in case, but I’ve used the back of a receipt and other small scraps when necessary. Best of luck in the contest! :-)

I adore sticky notes! I keep them in my purse and on my desk. :) Looking forward to GUTGAA ,and getting to know you better!

  5. Kyra Lennon Says:

Nice to meet you! :D I’m definitely not an early morning writer either – 10am is usually my starting point too!

  6. Janeal Falor Says:

I’m a late at night person, too. My brain just seems to function better then.

    Looking forward to the fun!

I write adult fantasy and magical realism, too. Do you have any sample chapters? I’d love to give your work a gander. We should be crit buddies! I have a website for mine here: http://thedarknessofthewomb.com/. We adult fantasy writers need to stick together. Fantasy seems like it’s ONLY for YA these days. It’s a little disheartening. :(

  9. Carrie-Anne Says:

I love that you write about reincarnation. One of these days I’m going to get back to the past life memoir I started some time ago. I’ve also written freeverse poetry from the POV of who I was before, and one of them won third place in a poetry competition.

Now I wish I had finally finished my rewrite so I could have participated in GUTGAA. Good luck!

And also wishing you a very productive #writemotivation month,
    Jocelyn

Hi, love the source of your inspiration. I like the idea of reincarnation. That we have past lives and each life is meant to teach us lessons to be better people. Anyway, it’s very nice to meet you. Stop by and say hello if you get the chance. I’m trying to make it easier on folk by adding the link, lol. http://anjeasandro.blogspot.com/

Ahhh, a fellow sticky-note lover. Unfortunately my daughter has found them irresistible as well, so I have to be sure to number the pad before using it… then go on a scavenger hunt. Nice to meet you!

  13. Beth Says:

hello Becka!! Another sticky note person here!! :) Nice to meet you! Enjoy GUTGAA!

  14. Jessica Foster Says:

Sticky notes and ponies are great obsessions to have. A couple of my friends have nicknamed me “Flutter” or “FlutterJess”, because I’m very much like that particular pony. Nice to meet you.

  15. Liz Hellebuyck Says:

Hi Rebecca. So we meet at another blog fest. :D Good luck to you too!

  16. stephscottil Says:

I’m enchanted by the ponies! (from your other post).

Reincarnation can lead to so many good story ideas! I’ve read a couple stories with that concept and both were totally different. Sticky notes are a good idea. I have an app on my phone called sticky notes that I use, but honestly, sometimes I just want a non-digital version I can write on and stick someplace. Although they usually end up crumpled in my purse. :)

i love all office supplies, especially my favorite pen – i’m picky about my pens – in twenty different colors and funky sticky notes.

  18. Dr Margaret Aranda Says:

I never thought of using a sticky note. Hmmmm. Yes, you are right. Sometimes the ideas just come. Thanks, and **Good Luck** to you on GUTGAA!! Muaaah!
