Hello Aledans! The day is finally here – the announcement of #PonyFest12! If you remember #PonyFest11 we had a great time designing ponies based on our novels and voting on our favorite, and this year is going to be even BIGGER! First, to tempt you to join, a beautiful custom by our very own Kalavista:
Kal has graciously agreed to customize this year’s winning pony as well. And based on her beautiful work, I think you’ll be happy with the results (click through to go to her DA page and see all her beautiful customs).
And now for #PonyFest12!
The Rules:
-either draw your own pony or use a template or the pony creator to make a pony based on your novel. Choose colors for the body, mane/tail, and eyes, as well as a symbol. Ponies can be earthers, unicorns or pegasi (no alicorns/unipegs please).
-all ponies must come from a full-length, original work (no fanfics). Unpublished novels are OK. Feel free to plug your published novel in the post if you are that lucky!
-it can be a pony based on a character, setting, or theme from your novel. You can make more than one pony, but they must be voted on as a whole, from the same book, and only ONE of those ponies will be customized.
-write up a short description of your pony(s), and a one sentence tag-line for the book.
-post the pony(s) on your blog by Sunday September 30th and reply here with the link to that post (please don’t link to your home page, the contest runs for a long time and you don’t want to make people scroll).
-from October 5th through 13th visit the other blogs and vote for your favorite pony!
-winner will be announced on October 14th!
The Prize: The winner (based on popular vote) will have their pony made into a real custom pony by Kalavista, plus receive a copy of her book, The Secret of Shadow! And this year the prize is even bigger, because the winner will also receive a copy of Spookygirl, by Jill Baguchinsky, and Angelfire, by Courtney A Moulton (also pony friends of mine).
EDIT: Beth Revis has donated a signed copy of her book A Million Suns to the prize pack!
Restrictions: The custom pony will not have clothes or accessories (no sculpty/clay will be used), so make a representation of the character, rather than a carbon-copy right down to their underwear. No Twice-As-Fancy symbols (symbols that cover the entire body), alicorns/unipegs, or sitting poses. Open to US/Canada residents only (you can still play, but only US/C residents can win the prize, sorry!).
Good luck everyone – I can’t wait to see all your beautiful designs!

I can’t wait to see your post ^_^

That is simply gorgeous. I’m loving the detail on the symbol. ^_^

The symbol is so gorgeous. She has another with lighter greens, but I thought the darker green just popped so well.

I love ponies (just posted about them last week)! The pony creator link is fabulous. I won’t have time to enter, but I’ll make some ponies and print them for novel inspiration.
September 26, 2012 at 11:24 am
Even if you don’t have time to make them for the deadline, please show them off! I’d love to see what you create

Here’s mine, though not very adventurous: http://carrieannebrownian.wordpress.com/2012/09/28/justines-pony/
I love drawing horses, but I went with the custom creator.
September 28, 2012 at 11:47 am
The custom creator is certainly easier – it’s what I’ll be using for this year’s pony too (I don’t enter the contest, but I like to create a pony for it anyways ;P)
September 29, 2012 at 1:24 am
Ummm…haha. I think I misunderstood the rules the first time I read this. I can only enter one book, right? I can’t enter two books with two different ponies–one from each manuscript I’ve written–with a blog post, tagline for each? Just wondering cause my daughter LOVES horses and she already drew them up and we painted them together. It was fun either way, so no big deal. But I don’t want to inadvertently break any rules by putting them both on my blog, so could you let me know for sure about this?
September 29, 2012 at 12:08 pm
You can only enter one book, but you can enter multiple ponies from that book.
You can always save the other books for next year – I plan to do this every year!
September 29, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Cool! That’s what i wanted to know.
I had a lot of fun with this, so I’m glad you’ll be doing it every year. Thanks!

My daughter, Kassidy, and I had SO much fun making our pony. Hope you like her and thanks for hosting the contest!

You’ll have to ask the customizer (which isn’t me – I’m not nearly that good!). If you have a Deviant Art account you can ask Kalavista here: http://kalavista.deviantart.com/art/Lothlorien-II-206436935 or you can go directly to her custom website here: https://sites.google.com/site/kalavistacustoms/Home (her email for commissions is posted on her website).
