Asiagoans: Soundtracks

It’s Becka Day on the Asiagoans Blog! Today’s topic: Soundtracks

Today we’re talking Soundtracks because Angela Wallace posted about her novel’s soundtrack last week and I’m a total copy-cat ;) I’m one of those people that NEEDS music to write (even if the music is only in my head) so I make playlists for each novel. Some of the songs just “feel” like they fit, others have scenes completely choreographed to them. Without further ado, here’s my playlist for Fie Eoin:

Asiagoans: New Adult Fiction

It’s Becka Day on the Asiagoans Blog! Today’s Topic: New Adult Fiction

You know how you feel when you first go out into the Real World? Whether it be off to college, or off to your first professional job, or off to your first house that you bought with your first (and hopefully only) significant other?

How about that feeling when you buy your first vacuum cleaner? (the epitome of adultness, for sure)

You’re not really a kid anymore, but you don’t feel like a real adult yet. When you were a kid going through something new you could find a book to relate to. But where are all the books about first vacuum cleaner purchases, and the horror of that first house falling through because the sellers are greedy jerks? Where are the novels about that first day at the real job when you are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and all your new co-workers have that sallow, been-sitting-under-fluorescent-lights-too-long look? They aren’t in the YA section. And they’re hard to find in the Adult section too.

Asiagoans: Contest Love

It’s Becka Day over on the Asiagoans blog! But since the post is so short, I’m just going to re-post it here :)

I found a pretty awesome contest today, and I wanted to pass it along to you guys. It’s called “Auntie B’s Book Club Contest” and it’s an opportunity to have four teens read your pitch and first 250 words (one page) and decide if they would pick your book up off the shelf. There are three prizes (all editing related, of course) and you have until July 17th to get your page and pitch polished!

Visit Brenda Drake’s blog for all the juicy details!

Asiagoans: Tension or Author-Karma?

It’s Becka Day on the Asiagoans Blog! Today’s post: Tension or Author-Karma?

I’m one of those people who likes to put my characters through the ringer. Cut Kaye’s wings off? Let’s send her climbing over the mountain in fear of her life. Cause, you know, losing a limb isn’t enough. You gotta make the poor girl climb a mountain, chased by a man who wants to rape and murder her, to up the tension. And between those two things she was kicked out of the priestesses – her lifelong dream. And because that wasn’t enough she ended up in a tribe that despises people with wings, and would cut them off and make her a slave if she hadn’t already lost them.

Asiagoans: Trying Something New

It’s Becka Day on the Asiagoans Blog! Today’s Post: Trying Something New

I’ve been doing a little bit of an experiment over on my blog after reading Kristen Lamb’s post Sacred Cow Tipping – Why Writers Blogging About Writing Is Bad. Of course this post created a big hoopla in the online writing community, and after the panic moment of “what am I supposed to blog about then?!” I realized that I already knew this. I just didn’t want to accept it.

Asiagoans: Using Characters in Real Life

It’s Becka Day on the Asiagoan’s blog! Today’s post: Using Characters in Real Life

I have a very personal relationship with my characters. More so, I think, than most people. I see them all as a facet of myself, and I have tough characters and weak characters, smart ones and dumb ones (don’t ask me who, they would be upset if I started ratting out the weak, dumb ones). I have moments when I’d like to be a little tougher because someone wants to walk all over me, or a little nicer to that bitch who’s trying to get me fired, or whatever it is that I feel I can’t really do on my own. And when I have those times, I call on my characters.
