Custom of the Week: Haku

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! I know I’ve already featured a Haku custom before but I couldn’t resist when I saw this one. His body is super long! He makes me want to watch Spirited Away again, which reminds me, I have Castle in the Sky and Ponyo waiting for me from Netflix. I think I know what I’ll be doing all day :)

I love the whiskers and tufts of hair! How amazing!

Custom of the Week: Phycodura

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! The merfolk part of you is really going to like today’s custom. Back when I first moved to Charleston I planned to get my masters in marine biology studying seahorses (but nuclear chemistry pays better), so when I saw today’s seapony custom I fell in love. I think my mermaid, Erie, would be a fan too – the merfolk in Speak the Ocean keep seahorses as pets, similar to dogs :)

Custom of the Week: Whispering Howls

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! Custom Pony of the Week is back for 2015 and we’re kicking things off with a book-themed pony called Whispering Howls (the book symbol is White Fang). This gorgeous pony was the first custom by Janeil Nichols, and I think she did a stellar job!

The details on the 3D symbol are amazing! And I love the curly hair!

Custom of the Week: Erie the Seapony

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! I’m recovering from the amazingness that was YAllFest yesterday, but I have a super extra special custom for you today. You might remember back when I featured the Wind Whistler Seapony in March and said I’d be commissioning an Erie version when I finished the first draft of Speak the Ocean. I finished the first draft a few weeks ago and commissioned my seapony and Tiella sent me photos of the finished project this week! In fact, I should be finished with my first read through and basic edits by the time Erie the seapony gets to my doorstep! (Which is why there was no update or science post this week – I’m scrambling to edit so I can send it to CPs)

*Squeals in excitement* Isn’t she stunning? I love the hair and eye color <3 And that she looks like she’s in a tiny fish tank. I’m going to have to replicate that.

Custom of the Week: Summer Bloom

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! How was everyone’s Halloween/Samhain? I heard there was snow in Michigan on Halloween, and while I remember dressing up with costumes over winter coats when I was younger, I don’t remember it ever actually snowing on Halloween. So why don’t we warm it up again with a beautiful summery pony? Caeti was one of the judges for #PonyFest14, and I do believe this is the first of her customs that I’ve featured.

Don’t you feel a warm summer breeze just looking at this pony? I love the jewels on her leg!

Custom of the Week: Witching Hour

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! I have a dark and twisty cover reveal for you tomorrow, and later this week I’ll be over at Dan Koboldt’s blog talking about Proper Lab Technique for his Science in SF series. If you missed the #PonyFest14 winners post, you can find it here. And speaking of dark and twisty and PonyFest – I have an awesome, Halloween inspired custom for you today, from one of the PonyFest14 judges! We’ve seen one of Jupi’s customs before – isn’t GIR adorable?

And the Winners of #PonyFest14 are….

Happy Sunday, Aledan Merfolk! As the title promises, today is the reveal day for the winners of PonyFest14! You’ve spent the past two weeks visiting the blogs and voting for your favorite designs, and if you’ve seen the voting post anytime after the poll closed you already know who won the popular vote.

Air Elemental started out with a strong lead before Pestas pulled ahead early in the voting and held on to the number one spot for almost the entire race. Kasmira was right behind him for much of the time, often tied, but on the final day Hunger surged ahead in a last-minute sprint…that unfortunately winded her before she reached the finish line. Kasmira saved her energy until just before the midnight mark and pulled out a last-second win, much like Marce did in PonyFest12!

Congratulations Kasmira and Bethany!
Congratulations Kasmira and Bethany!

That fierce little pony wins a pile of books and a Mane Six character of her choice!

But that wasn’t the only vote this year, and although I’ve known who won the judge panel vote for the past several days, I’ve been sitting on that information like Smaug on a pile of gold. And it was SO HARD not to spill the beans before now, because I’m delighted! The winner of the panel vote has been playing PonyFest since it’s beginning in 2011, and I adore her writing. In fact, now that she’s won the judges vote, she’ll have an official custom to go with the poor excuse for a custom I made her last year ;)

That’s right, Cetus the SeaDragon is getting a friend!

Congratulations Air Elemental and Angela!

This angel of a pony also wins a pile of books – and a custom pony based on this design! The judges panel has already gotten to work helping Kalavista to sculpt wings, and I can’t wait until I can show you guys the finished product – it’s going to be stunning!

So there you have it, Aledan Merfolk, the winners of PonyFest14!

To everyone who played, I want to give a huge THANK YOU! I can’t express how much this contest brightened my days as I clicked through to look at the ponies time and time again. You’re all very talented writers, and very talented pony designers. I can’t wait to have your books on my bookshelf!

And if you didn’t win, or didn’t know about the contest in time to enter: No worries! I run it every year in September/October (around my birthday, because who doesn’t want all that happiness on their blog for their birthday?!) And if you’re really itching for your own custom pony let me know – I’ll get you in contact with a customizer who can make it for you :)
