Happy Yule everyone! Pictured above is my Yule candle from two years ago (the only one I could find after the Great Computer Crash of 2010), and I wish you all the same calm happiness that I get every year staring into the flame that promises the return of the sun.
And of course this Yule is extra special because of the lunar eclipse early this morning. I didn’t get up to watch it, but I saw one a couple years ago and I remember just how awesome it looks. And with everyone mentioning how scary something like that would be before Science took all of the magic out of the world (yes I’m a scientist – shush), I of course thought of Fie Eoin. I know, everything makes me think of Fie Eoin.
The Seven Tribes celebrate Yule, although it isn’t one of the Big Three Festival Days, and they light Yule logs that are supposed to burn all night and light the way for the mother-goddess Aleda to come back to the world after her death (when I post Aleda’s story you will see how the actual events of her death brought this ritual about). Well, Loria and her new lover forget to light the Yule log before they go to bed, and when Loria wakes up in the middle of the night and realizes that it’s too dark she opens the door just a bit to let in enough light to be able to see. That’s been the scene for years, and it’s a bad omen that they forgot to light the log. But now I’m thinking that when she opens the door, already feeling horrible about forgetting the goddess, she’ll see this blood-red moon looming over the Seven Tribes. Because who wants to freak someone out only a little bit when you can REALLY freak them out? 🙂
So Happy Yule, and don’t forget to light the candle to show Aleda the way back home. If you don’t the moon might turn bloody for the second night in a row, and no one wants that.
