Hello #PitchWars peeps! Welcome to Mermaids and Margaritas. Iโm Becka, head mermaid and margarita-maker.
I live in Charleston, SC, although Iโm originally from Lansing and Grand Rapids, MI (and married a boy from Detroit). Said boy and I have been married for 9.5 years (been together for 15) and have lived in Charleston for eleven. We have two American Staffordshire Terrier mixes (one is part Dachshund. I know: ouch!), three cats (one came with us all the way from Michigan!), and five chickens. Three of those baby chickens arrived in a box barely bigger than a shoebox three days ago, and Iโm already in love with them <3
This year, I submitted a manuscript called SPEAK THE OCEAN, and youโve probably guessed that itโs about mermaids. Creepy mermaids. My mermaids canโt grow legs and become human. In fact, theyโre one of the apex predators of the sea (sharks can and do kill them, but not often). Just like in the original Hans Christian Andersen story, my mermaids turn into seafoam when they die, which is why it took so long for humans to find them (no bodies). Because of my background in fisheries biology, my fantasy story is very much grounded in science, right down to the feeling of the electroshocker.
In college I was a dumbass and electrocuted myself while trying to collect fish in a river. That shit HURTS. Which is whyโif youโre the MC and you feel thatโyouโre reluctant to use it on anything else, even a fish. Especially a fish that looks pretty damn humanoid. And a fish thatโs pretty damn humanoid doesnโt learn to be quiet if itโs not shocked every time it makes a noise.
I think you see where this is going. Actually, you may not, because StO isn’t a romance. It’s more like this:
Once more with feeling. And blood. Lots of blood.
The whole marine biology thing didnโt work out because I enjoy working in a lab with chemicals that change color and things that go BOOM on occasion. Iโm now a nuclear chemistโNO I DONโT MAKE BOMBS. I actually protect you from the bombs that are being made. I test water, soil, vegetation, and tissue samples for radioactivity, PCBs, pesticides, and herbicides, to make sure the bad things arenโt getting into the water and food supply. Iโm one of the good guys ๐
Iโm a Whovian, a Cylon, a level 74 Night Elf Hunter (although itโs been a while), and a My Little Pony fanatic (I no longer collect, but I pre-date the Bronies by about 30 years). I have somehow turned into a backyard farmer.
But Iโve always been a mermaid.
Finally, my amazing CP Michael Mammay (who is also participating in PitchWars, but doesn’t have a blog to do a fun post of his own), wrote a testimonial for me:
Hi. My name is Mike, and Iโm also entering Pitch Wars. Iโve worked with Becka on writing for the last year, and Iโd like to provide this testimonial on her behalf.
She once killed a man with her bare hands. Donโt worry, he was totally a bad guy. He was mean to a puppy or something. And she may or may not have a Pegasus for a pet. Iโve never seen it myself, but South Carolina is a small state, and people talk. Oh, you want to know about writing? She knows like ALL the words. Rumor has it that she wrote the dictionary.
Seriously, sheโs great to work with and takes feedback better than anyone Iโve ever met. And you can trust me on that. Because Iโm Batman.
Mike is an amazing CP, and anyone would be lucky to have him as a mentee. Mostly because he’s willing to keep that secret about what happened to the mean-puppy guy…
Wait.
You can find the other mentee bios by following this link.
Baby chickenses! They are adorable. Mine are becoming obnoxious, and they’ve learned how to break out of their enclosure even with things covering the top to keep them in (they’re 8 weeks now). Ugh. It’s almost time for them to graduate outside with the big girls. As soon as we figure out how to keep them separated so no one is pecked to death.
I loves them! But Max has to go. He was crowing at 5:45 this morning! IT WAS STILL DARK OUT! And he attacked one of the babies ๐
Hops the dog is in absolute love with the babies too. It’s adorable. They don’t feel quite the same way about her ๐
Go #PitchWars! I’m rooting for you, because StO is a great story! ๐
The new chicks are so cute. My girls are wearing me down to get a coop. We might have room for three. (I can’t even believe I’m considering it, but one of the local feed stores is supposed to have some available in a month.)
oooh, you should totally get some babies of your own! ^_^ I’m going to keep posting pictures until you do (and then you can post pictures!)
Great bio and best of luck! Loving the creepy mermaids, and Erie is a fabulous name (though I’m partial, being from Erie County, NY ๐ And I love how big a comeback My Little Pony has had (or maybe, they never went away?) I was obsessed as a kid in the 80s.
They went away for a while, but returned in 2003, and have been going strong pretty much since then ๐ The new show is so adorable – definitely worth a watch!
Ooh, I’ve been thinking about getting chickens. And creepy mermaids sound awesome. Good luck in Pitch Wars!
The chickens are a joy, and so easy to take care of! Just make sure they’re all female unless you want to wake up early every morning ๐
