Happy Thursday, Aledan Merfolk! At the end of last year I told you Mermaids and Margaritas was moving to a new site, and here we are (same address, but self-hosted). Everything looks pretty similar to what it used to be, and everything should be moved over, but you’ll notice the colors aren’t so glaring and there’s some beautiful Erie artwork by Diana Beebe in the sidebar now (you can see the whole picture on the Home page).
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Hubs and I had a very low-key but lots-of-food season. We played a lot of video games and watched a lot of movies and read a few books. Since THE HATE U GIVE (which you have to read), I’ve read THE PURLOINED POODLE (an IRON DRUID CHRONICLES short story, from the POV of Oberon the Irish Wolfhound), RED RISING by Pierce Brown, and it’s sequel GOLDEN SON (OMG THAT ENDING!), and a CP book that I loved but can’t tell you about yet. I dnf-ed WINTERSONG – I liked the first half okay, but the second half was too slow for me and I wasn’t that invested. I started TRUTHWITCH by Susan Dennard and THIS SAVAGE SONG by Victoria Schwab.
So, it’s 2017. Last year was both amazing (I signed with an agent!) and horrible (election and then Hubs lost his job for a month). I have to confess, I haven’t done a damn thing writing-wise since November. I did write a little Yule/Ocean fluff scene (I wrote it on Yule, set during Yule, because that’s how I roll), but I haven’t done any actual work. It’s time to hop back on that pony and take the reins, so I’m reading STORY FIX by Larry Brooks to make a plan to get Fie Eoin in shape.
Guess what else I’m getting in shape? ME. I know, everyone’s doing that in January, but it’s really really time to actually stick to it. So no drinking on weekdays, yoga at least twice a week, and I need to get to some cardio (now’s the time to do it – it’s cool enough to run outside right now. Come summer I’ll have to get a gym membership to run or do it at like 3am so I don’t die of heat stroke). Have I mentioned how much I hate running? But I have audiobooks now, so I’m hoping that’ll work better than music. They even make cleaning the bathroom not so bad.
And that’s the beginning to 2017. Newish website. Newish Me. But as always: working on Fie Eoin 😉 Have a wonderful beginning to your new year, Aledans, and I’ll see you back here on Sunday for a gorgeous custom pony!
Happy Thursday, Aledan Merfolk! I’ve had a big, busy week since last I saw you – but the biggest news is that I NAILED MY EDITS! Woot! The “training manual” sections worked, making Finn less douchy while still keeping him in character worked, the sweeter sex scenes worked (and now I get to go back through and turn the heat up again ;P), and all the other little tweaks and edits worked. I’m so relieved! This was my first round of edits with an agent, so I’m really glad to hear my changes worked 😀
We go on sub next week! Eeeep!
Now I’m CPing for my agent, which is super fun. And I love the book, it’s very much in line with StO, but without mermaids.
Last week I finished listening to THE MIRROR EMPIRE by Kameron Hurley and started HALF A WAR by Joe Abercrombie, but I haven’t been able to listen to much of it lately because I haven’t been doing the test that allows for audiobooks in the past week (those samples don’t come in often, but when they do come in it’s all at once). I finally started reading THANKS FOR THE TROUBLE yesterday at lunch, and I’m only 30 pages from finishing, so I’ll be finishing at lunch! That’s how good this book is! And it’s not even fantasy. I don’t always read Contemporary YA, but when I do apparently the MC must be mute and I’ll adore it (remember me raving about SEA OF TRANQUILITY? I still think about that book *often*).
Once I finish THANKS, I’m jumping back on the writing train to finish Enfields. I finally figured out what needs to happen next (thank goodness! I was stuck for MONTHS!), and it’s going to be very exciting and a little depressing. My favorite combo 😉
Have a wonderful weekend, Aledans, and if you need a little pick-me-up, have some chocolate:
Happy Thursday, Aledan Merfolk! If you remember last week’s post, I’m happy to say that Boudin’s belly has finally calmed down. His official diagnosis was “Stress Colitis”. He was stressed out because of how stressed out I was, and then he started exploding all over the living room and waking me up every two hours, which stressed me out more, which stressed him out more. It was a vicious cycle of stress pooping that we just couldn’t break. Thank goodness that week is over 😉
This week is much calmer, both at home and at the dayjob. In fact, while I made a goal to edit two chapters a day this week, I ended up editing EIGHT chapters on Tuesday! And then I figured out a way to fix three weak areas with one tiny change! And then I decided to completely rewrite the first scene in Chapter 4, because that’s how my brain rolls 😛 I also bought The Emotion Thesaurus, because my characters “shrug” and “smile” and “frown” WAAAAAY too much.
Writing is hard, guys.
This weekend I read THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE, and the ending was so depressing that I started re-reading THRONE OF GLASS to remember that things get better. I mean, they get worse first, but then they get sort of better. The series isn’t finished yet, so I’m not sure how much better things will get, but at least there’s Chaol 😉 I seriously wish they’d make this series into a movie, mostly so I can see the fabulous dresses Celaena wears.
Tomorrow is the last of Ocean’s Story, so make sure you return for that. And I have another merpony for you this weekend!
And last, but not least, it’s my little sister’s 30th birthday today. Happy Birthday, Mo!
