Last Week’s Fail and a #WriteMotivation Update

You may have noticed my utter fail last week as far as updating the blog goes (if you’re looking for “The Really Late But Completely Worth It Science Tuesday” you can find it here). The fail encompassed just about everything except for the dayjob. This week’s been much the same, but that’s ok because next week I’m going on vacation! And instead of going to Key West like I usually do this time of year I’m staying home, working on house projects and Apollo, and basically making up for the fail of the last two weeks (and last month in general).

Oh yes, and spending at least part of every day at the beach or pool. It is vacation, after all.

Hopefully with my batteries recharged I can get back on the #writemotivation train and get some stuff done for the month. Since I missed last week’s update, here’s my progress for the past two weeks:

1. Finish first round of Apollo edits. I’m only one chapter away on the paper edits! I just need to transcribe it all to the computer.

2. Finish critiques for Ryan and Lindsay.

3. Start critique for Tyffani.

4. Re-write NAMELESS query, and write APOLLO query/synopsis. The NAMELESS query is re-written and currently being looked over by the first round of judges in Query Kombat.

Not exactly how far I wanted to be by the halfway point of the month, but I still have half a month (and vacation!) to get farther along. The really daunting task is going to be transcribing the edits, but once that’s finished the critiques and APOLLO synopsis should be fairly simple. The APOLLO query won’t be as easy, but I learned with NAMELESS to write the synopsis first and pare it down to the query once you’re happy with it. Much easier that way.

Oh yeah, and Hubs and I made it through the Martha episodes of Dr Who and have moved on to Donna! It won’t be long before we’re done with Ten and on to Eleven (Ten is both Hubs and my least favorite of the new Doctors). I’m going to go out on a limb here and say we’ll be on Eleven by the end of vacation ;)

Do you have any vacation plans coming up, Aledans?

#WriteMotivation Goals and a Call for Apollo Critters!

Boudin is so happy it's May!

Boudin is so happy it’s May!

Dear Aledans: it’s MAY! Finally that horrible month known as April is over, and it’s the wonderful month of Trina’s Day, Vacation, and my (7th) Anniversary! (Although Hubs and I have been together for almost thirteen years now)

Camp NaNo didn’t go as well as I had planned, but it wasn’t a total bust. I’ve edited more than half of Apollo and Daphne, but I haven’t had time to type up most of those edits. I still feel like there’s something huge I’m missing, but I guess all the problems will be revealed when I send it to my critters (hopefully before vacation on the 17th). If you know your mythology inside and out and want to critique Apollo let me know – I have some “I know nothing about mythology” critters already but I need a couple more “I know my myths like the back of my hand” critters.

I’ve re-worked my query for Nameless to try to get into the Query Kombat Brackets on May 13th, and once Apollo is finished I’m going to go through the first 50 pages of Nameless again to see what needs to happen. It seems that’s where I’m losing agent interest, and I think I know exactly where it’s happening. Even Kindra says “will this night never end?” – that should have tipped me off right away.

Hubs and I have been slogging through the beginning of Martha on Dr Who. I love Martha as a companion, but all of her episodes before “Human Nature” suck. From then on she has one of my favorite seasons, but getting to that point with her is painful and boring.

I’ve also been slogging through A Feast for Crows – again, painful and boring ;)

On the #WriteMotivation front, here’s my list again:

1. Finish first round of Apollo edits.

2. Finish critiques for Ryan and Lindsay.

3. Start critique for Tyffani.

4. Re-write NAMELESS query, and write APOLLO query/synopsis.

And #4 is already halfway done! Laura still has a couple tweaks on the query that she’ll email me about this weekend, but that sucker is just about as good as it’s ever going to get.

Trina’s Day is on Sunday, so I’ll be putting up a special, sexy Fie Eoin Friday tomorrow. I just have to decide which one. Go back in time to Kindra’s first Trina’s Day with Gar? Or maybe some sexy Faye-action with Kaye and Bryant? Or I could go way back in time to Fennec and Loria, although that might give away spoilers about the High Priestess…

I hope you have a happy May, Aledans. Don’t forget to celebrate the Feast of Lovers on Sunday and I hope to see you back here tomorrow for FEF :)

I’ll Be Joining #WriteMotivation Next Month.

My brand new - blooming! - wisteria plant.

My brand new – blooming! – wisteria plant.

It’s been quite the couple weeks, hasn’t it Aledans? I didn’t feel like posting an update last week because there wasn’t a whole lot to talk about. I didn’t get any work on Apollo done because I was glued to the news like just about everyone else. This week has been much kinder, until I found out it’s going to cost almost a grand to fix the lawn that TruGreen killed. If you’re thinking of using a lawn service in the future stay very, VERY far away from TruGreen.

I’ve been working in the yard a lot on the weekends, and I’ve been crazy busy at work, so I haven’t been online much lately. Hubs and I tamed one giant azalea and hacked back the other to make a space for the oak tree that was growing out of the backside (and hacked a second oak tree out of the middle of that giant azalea). That took all weekend (they are seriously as big as a small room), and then last weekend we put together the most annoying composter ever – without wanting to kill each other!

My wisteria also arrived last weekend, and it was blooming! It’s so pretty, and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

In Camp NaNo news, I’m way behind. On the hand-written edits I’m about 35% finished, but I’ve only typed up about 10% of them. Instead I’ve been carrying around a quarter of the book in my purse, just waiting for a chance to transcribe everything. It’s supposed to rain all weekend though, so I should have some time to type. I definitely won’t finish by the end of April as I’d hoped. This month has just been too crappy for that.

I’ll be joining #WriteMotivation next month to complete Apollo’s edits and finish all the critiques I’ve promised. I also need to re-write my query based on feedback by Lauren Spieller (she gives amazing feedback by the way – I won a critique on Twitter, but I’d seriously consider hiring her to look at future queries). So Thursdays throughout May will be #WriteMotivation update days. For now my goals look like this:

1. Finish first round of Apollo edits.

2. Finish critiques for Ryan and Lindsay.

3. Start critique for Tyffani.

4. Re-write NAMELESS query (if I haven’t already), and write APOLLO query/synopsis.

Feel free to brandish the whip if I’m not getting things done, Aledans. What are your goals for next month?

I Think April is Trying to Kill Me.

Muskie's worried April will come after him next.

Muskie’s worried April will come after him next.

Last week April was being a bitch. This week April’s more like a homicidal maniac. When Hubs started getting sick on Saturday we figured it was food poisoning. When he was still sick on Sunday we thought maybe a really loooong case of food poisoning. When I started puking Sunday night we realized it wasn’t food poisoning, but the stomach flu.

When we woke up on Monday morning, both sick, and found doggy diarrhea in the living room I knew that April had it out for me.

So I’ve waved the white flag. I give up, April. You win. I’m just going to float along for the rest of the month not expecting anything good out of you. You’ve broken me. I’ve always liked May better anyways.

*sticks out tongue*

I haven’t moved any further on Apollo since last week, although I’ve been reading A Feast For Crows quite a bit and watching Dr Who marathons with Hubs (and really, if the one good thing that comes out of April is that Hubs now likes Dr Who then I’m ok with that).

I hope your April is going better, Aledans. The wisteria is still blooming, so it can’t all be bad. And since I was sick this past Tuesday and missed the Science News post I’ll tack it onto the beginning of next week’s Science post. Have a wonderful weekend!

April is a Bitch, and so is Daphne.

Bou's got the right idea. Sleep through April.

Bou’s got the right idea. Sleep through April.

Aledans, I’m sure if you’ve seen me around the internet at all this week you know April and I have nearly come to blows. If you haven’t seen me around the internet at all this week it’s because April and I have nearly come to blows. Let’s agree that April Fool’s Day should never fall on a Monday again. It’s just not fair (hear that calendar-makers? Act accordingly).

Camp NaNo started out a miserable failure, until I realized I was trying to do something completely unnecessary. Nameless needed so many complete re-writes that I assumed Apollo would too. I’ve read through it a number of times and Sandhya (ie. Adriana Ryan, who has unveiled herself to the world!) read through it, and you know what? I think it just needs a fairly big edit. I don’t think everything has to be scraped and re-written.

There are some really, really good parts already, and I learned a lot about writing before I wrote the first draft. In this draft I have to cut some scenes, tighten some others, punch up the tension, and make Daphne more sympathetic. That last one is the part I’m still having troubles with, but I started writing the scene where Daphne meets Apollo from her POV, and it’s helping me get into her head and figure out why she is the way she is. Because I know she comes across as a bit of a bitch. And he falls in love with her despite that.

In fact, since today is technically Fie Eoin Friday why don’t I give you a little taste? It’s not the full scene, and it’s not edited because it’s not actually going to be part of the book, but have some Daphne:

~~~~~
Senior Year. Daphne couldn’t wait to get out of the hell-hole that was Olympia High School and across the country to NYU. Assuming they accepted her, of course. Even if they didn’t she planned to jump ship and move as far away as possible. She was over the cliques, the constant supervision, and most of all the asshole boys.
Speaking of asshole boys, Homeroom was suddenly inundated with the King of the Douchebags—Eros Phanes. Daphne was really hoping she wouldn’t have to see his fat face this year.
“Far-shooter!” He yelled, but for once his taunting voice wasn’t directed at her. “Did you get lost on the way to school this morning, Shooter? You belong at Capital.”
A tall, handsome boy in the front row cringed. He had short, dark hair just beginning to curl at the ends like it needed to be cut, and clothes that were a little worn around the hems. Clean and pressed, but worn. Daphne was pretty sure he was on the cross country team with her and won last weekend’s match against Capital.
Whoever he was, he’d incurred Eros’ wrath, which automatically made him her ally.
“I’m not lost,” the boy said. “I transferred.” His voice was a nice, even baritone.
Eros sat in the desk next to him. “Finally got sick of those loser Cougars, huh? Decided to be a Bear?”
The boy ignored Eros, but his hands folded into fists as if he couldn’t wait to punch that chubby face. Daphne liked him already.
“So what’s with the move, Shooter?”
The boy’s whole body seemed to tense, and Daphne walked over—she was better prepared to deal with Eros than this new kid.
She dropped her books on Eros’ desk with a loud bang. “You’re in my seat.”
He looked up, surprised. “I don’t see your name on it.”
She leaned into his face and scowled. “Out. Now.”
His jaw set and he sneered, but stood. She stared at him as he moved a row back and sat behind the new kid. She jerked her head a tiny bit—a warning. Whoever this new kid was, woe be to Eros if he tried to hurt him. If Daphne could help it Eros wouldn’t hurt anyone ever again.
~~~~~

Of course Eros does hurt them both, again and again.

Have a good weekend, Aledans. And if you feel the need to throw down the gauntlet with April give me a call: I’ll be your backup.

A Relaxing Weekend of Wine and Books

BeckaWineIt’s #PitMad day over on Twitter, Aledans! I’ll be tweeting my pitch throughout the day, as well as RTing some of my favorite pitches on the hashtag. So if you’re following me on Twitter, be prepared for an onslaught of Pitch Madness ;)

That should make up for not tweeting much this past week. The weekend was crazy awesome – full of dirty jokes and Flight of the Conchords. I was a little worried it had been so long since I saw my best friend that things would have changed, but it was just the same as ever. And now she’s looking at jobs in Charleston so she’ll be around all the time! I’m going to need a lye brain rinse if she moves here. I already feel so dirty.

I’m gearing up for Camp NaNo to start on Monday. I’ve got my playlist ready and have to look up a couple things in Olympia, Washington, but I’m pretty much ready to bust out the second draft of this bad boy. I’ll be setting aside my critiques and Custom of the Week for April, but the new Science Tuesday posts will still go up, and I’ll let you know my progress on Thursdays like normal (yes, I know today is Friday – I’m completely off this week).

This weekend, however, is all about relaxing! After last weekend’s whirlwind of adventure (and cold rain), I’m ready for a break. And the house is super-clean right now, so it’s going to be all books and wine for me. What does the weekend have in store for you, Aledans?

Today Is My Friday!

Happy Friday, Aledans!

No, I’m not crazy. Today is my Friday. One of my best friends from college is coming down for the weekend, so I’m taking Friday and Monday off of work to hang out with her. That also means I won’t be putting up a Custom Pony of the Week this weekend, since I’ll be too busy having fun!

As you can imagine, it’s been a busy week around here preparing for the weekend. We’ve been cleaning the house and I’ve been working ahead at the dayjob, but I’ve still found time to finish some critiquing. I sent Amy’s crit back to her yesterday, am caught up on L Anne’s weekly chapter crit, and have started Ryan’s crit. I didn’t make it into Pitch Madness, but I’m re-working my query so I can send more out next week. Then it’ll be April, and time for Camp NaNo! Here I come, Apollo. I hope you’re ready for me to break you (and then put you back together again…ish).

Today’s post is short, cause I have plenty of errands yet to run. I’ll see you Aledans next week!

Once Again The Writing Community Proves To Be The Most Amazing People Ever.

My guard dog, Hops.

My guard dog, Hops.

What a crazy day, Aledans! I’ve been working on fixing my query for #PitchMadness tomorrow, only to realize that I need a logline, not a query! Oops *blushes* That’s what happens when you don’t read directions, kids.

Then in the middle of the day I got a call from ADT that our alarm was going off at the house. Fairly confident no one was inside breaking stuff (because Hops would stop them) I drove home to check it out. Either the stealthiest burglar was in there, or the dogs jumped on the window to set off the alarm and make me come home, because I didn’t see anything. The dogs were super excited I was home to turn off the annoying noise, and then of course they rolled around in the dirt when I let them outside. So I had to wash them off before I headed back to work.

When I checked Twitter after the alarm fiasco, @writerjayme had re-written my logline for me. It’s so much more exciting now! Take a look:

“When Chief Oak sells Kindra’s sister to the enemy, she’s forced to choose between a daring rescue mission and wresting control from the chief before he can sabotage the tribe further.”

So much love. Once again the writing community proves to be the most amazing people ever. That’s the best part of these contests, really – helping each other to polish our work, and collectively stressing over it.

Speaking of polishing work, I’m still working on the critiques I owe. Kurt’s was quick and easy (and really interesting!) and I’m a little over half done with Amy’s. Ryan’s is next in the mix, and I’m getting a chapter a week from L Anne. Then I have Tyffani’s. I’m going to try to get them all done by the end of March, because I found out Camp NaNo has switched to April this year, and I’d like to use it to bust out the next draft of Apollo. He started as a NaNovel – I’m pretty sure I can write it again in one month, especially with the drive that NaNo brings.

Plus, you know, I don’t have to try to herd cats while I do it this time ;) (I love all my wrimo kittens!)

Anyone else doing Camp NaNo next month? What about #PitchMadness? Need help with your pitch, or want to pick mine apart? Leave it in the comments and I’ll take a look at it tonight! :)

(P.S. did you see my new feature this week, Science Tuesdays?)

Sometimes You Need A Bland Week

Sometimes you just need to take a week off and rest.

Sometimes you just need to take a week off and rest.

Happy Friday Eve, Aledans! Today I’m sore from head to toe, which means I finally did yoga yesterday. And not just a little stretching, but real yoga where you focus on your breathing so you don’t realize how much harder your pushing yourself until the dog jumps on you the next morning and everything hurts. Ow.

This week I have no riveting stories of deer attacks or health issues or anything exciting. It was a rather bland week, to tell the truth. Not that that’s a bad thing – sometimes you need a bland week to recover from the excitement of a deer attack. It’s also not to say I haven’t been busy. Work on the vet website has stalled while I wait for tech support to figure out what’s going on with installing wordpress, and in the interim the vet has me helping with another blog instead. I’m still cruising along in my critiques, and reading SONGS OF THE EARTH (which I’m loving!).

Apollo has gone nowhere this week. I wrote Kail fanfic instead (and was surprised by how good it is. I can’t believe I can write that well). I’m still trying to figure out exactly what needs to stay and what needs to go in Apollo. I was trying to figure out what all my plot points were yesterday, but I kept getting confused because I’m still not sure what the main storyline is. I thought it was Apollo getting over Hy’s death, but maybe it’s more about trying to win his dad’s acceptance. Or maybe it’s really a romance about Daphne at its heart. I’m getting together with some writer friends soon for adult milkshakes, so I’m hoping they can help me figure it out.

You read that right. Adult milkshakes. It’s going to be glorious.

What are your plans for the next week, Aledans? Anything glorious going on?

And Then I Was Attacked By Five Deer

Hops and Boudin.

Hops and Boudin.

Hello Aledans! This is going up late today because I’ve been researching agents and sending out queries between the craziness at work (because what else do you do when you get another rejection? Cry? I don’t think so). I’ve had a pretty busy week so far, which was only compounded by the fact that my sister spent the past five days in Key West. I bought this dress (in blue) and drank margaritas out of jealousy.

Then I was attacked by five deer.

No, really. I was almost stampeded-over by five deer. I let the dogs out to pee on Tuesday night, and on their way to the fence they got distracted and started chasing something that looked like a big dog. Then a few more passed by and I saw they were deer. Then five more tried to run past, saw the dogs, and turned to run towards ME instead! I screamed and they turned back. One of them slammed into the fence and then jumped it into the backyard, then jumped out the other side (after breaking a terra cotta pot and running through a giant azalea). The dogs chased them to the end of the park and came back.

Last night poor Boudin was depressed because there were no deer to chase. He didn’t even want to eat his deer antlers because he was so sad. I told him I’m pretty sure the deer won’t be back anytime soon, then took him for a nice long walk so he could sniff the deer tracks.

In other news, I finished STONEHENGE at midnight last night. It was so good. So Good. All of the characters that I loved at the beginning turned out to be bat-shit crazy assholes by the end (except the MC), and I wanted them all to die. I won’t tell you if they did or not, but if you know anything about me and the words “so good” I’m sure you can guess. Now I’ve moved on to SONGS OF THE EARTH by Elspeth Cooper and I’m already enjoying it.

I’m also storylining some Daphne and Psyche backstory, because one of Adriana’s huge flags on APOLLO was the fact that Daphne isn’t very sympathetic. Part of me thinks this is a good thing, since, well, if you know the myth you know why. The other part realizes this is bad, because it doesn’t give Apollo much of a reason to pursue her (other than teenage boy hormones). She also pointed out that the Daphne/Psyche conflict wasn’t deep enough. These girls really hate each other, but there isn’t a good enough reason why. So now I’m figuring out why (while still adhering to the Psyche/Eros mythology – I love this type of challenge).

This weekend I’ll be finishing up the vet’s website, which will be a huge load off my shoulders. I’m halfway done with one promised critique, which will leave two more, and then I’ll start re-writing APOLLO. I’m so excited to be writing again, rather than editing!

What about you, Aledans? What are you excited about this week?
