Thank God It’s Over!

Thank God It’s Over!

Today is Dec 2nd, which means that NaNoWriMo is officially Over and Done With. No more counting words. No more crazy plot ninjas. No more stressing about being ML and not winning.

And I didn’t win, my friends. I didn’t even come close to winning NaNo. But I did meet some really great characters (both in my book and at write-ins!), and find some really interesting places, and plan out some Really exciting storylines. I obviously wasn’t ready to dive head-first into Book of Souls, so I’ll let it sit for a little while and simmer until I am ready. And in the meantime I’ll be working on editing Fie Eoin.

I’m actually pretty excited for Fie Eoin. I’ve hit my stride with it, and while I’ve already found a few places in the last chapter that could use another coat of polish it’s starting to come together really well. I’m tying up all the loose ends I left in the first (and second) draft. I’m working out all the little quirks of the characters (and there are many!). I’m going through with a fine-toothed comb and fixing any little problem spots that I can. No more floating heads and dialogue that sounds the same no matter who is speaking. No more random scenes that don’t move the plot forward.

My goal is to have Fie Eoin out on submission by the time the next NaNo rolls around. And then I’ll be able to say Thank God That’s Over.

Good luck, NaNo Friends, on your amazing accomplishments for the rest of the year. And cheers for writing any number of words last month. You participated in an awesome thing, and I hope you got as much out of NaNo as I always have.

NaNoWriMo Day 21

So, by now it’s a pretty good guess that I’m behind and I’m not catching up. And I’ve been wanting to write anything but BoS (yesterday while at work I even started storylining a Phooka Tales sequel, which I had never even considered before now). And more importantly I’ve wanted to write Fie Eoin. So today I decided I would.

Enter Karigan, the newest character in BoS. She dropped out of a tree with a spear in her hand and although I was really tempted to name her Kindra there were two problems with that. A) Kindra does not act anything like her daughter and this girl is much more like her daughter, and B) Kindra does not like heights and would not be up in a tree in the first place. Besides, as much as I love Kindra, I really really like writing Karigan.

It’s a dirty trick, I’m breezing through her introduction in the story. This might be just the dirty little trick I need to not give up.

Neona, Sean and Ali: meet plot ninja Karigan.

NaNoWriMo Day 19: Happy ML Day!

I want to take a moment out of my regularly scheduled moan-fest about my wordcount (I broke 20k!) to talk to you about the awesome people known as NaNoWriMo Municipal Liasons, or MLs. Today is ML Appreciation Day, and if you don’t appreciate your ML you better just take a seat and listen up, because I can guarantee that no matter how bad a job you think your ML is doing this year, they are working their butt off for you.

Your ML, if they are lazy, started working in September getting everything ready for NaNo. Many MLs start working in April towards the next NaNo, and some start the morning after the TGIO party. They are volunteers, working hard to make your NaNo experience a good one. They don’t get paid, they don’t get reimbursed. The goodies they give you come from their paycheck, and the time they give you comes from their family and friends. They are working behind the scenes constantly – making sure the calendar is updated, making sure the emails are going out in a timely manner, making sure the forums are a welcoming place and that all questions are answered. They probably didn’t start writing their novel until halfway through Day One because they are trying to get the Write-Ins planned, the questions answered, the goodie bags together and the prizes ready.

In short, they are working to help put on the biggest writing competition in the world for your region.

I won’t say it’s a thankless job, but I won’t say it’s an easy one either. What I will say is that the reason your ML is out there, working hard, is because of you. Because no matter how awful their day has been, no matter how dismal their word count, no matter how much they miss their family, or are getting reamed at their job for slacking off, spending two hours at a Write-In with you will cheer them up.

You are the reason they are ML. You are the ones that cheer them up. You are the ones they work so hard for. So if you haven’t yet today, tell your ML thank you. Let them know you appreciate all their hard work and all of their sacrifice. That’s all the reimbursement they need.

NaNoWriMo Day 17

I haven’t given up yet folks, although I’ve been sorely tempted as I watch that little purple bar climb further and further away from my little blue wordcount bars. I’ve been writing consistently, but not as quickly as I need to. I’m 10k behind with a trip looming in less than a week, and I kind of feel like I’ve already lost.

And instead of writing a long, lamenting post with a half-assed pep-talk at the end I’m going to point you over to http://doycetesterman.com/index.php/2010/11/midwestern-rules/ for a good ol’ fashioned “buck up and finish what you started” speech.

And now to throw some “Genre Appropriate Ninjas” into my story. Re-Forgetters here I come!

NaNoWriMo Day 11

It happens every NaNo. You get to that point in your novel (this year it was chapter 2 for me) where you hate it. It’s crap. With stupid characters that you don’t like doing stupid things that you don’t approve of, in a world as flat as that sheet of paper you are scratching all this dribble out on, going through the motions of a plot that you have no control over anymore (assuming you even have a plot at this point). You’re a day behind, now two days behind, now 10,000 words behind and you feel like you will never catch up. And there’s that person who runs their mouth at Every Damn Write-in with a 30k word count and they just won NaNo Bingo….again! You might as well quit.

My friends, this is the worst time to quit. This is where they separate the winners from the losers of NaNo. Because the winners aren’t just the people who write 50k in 30 days – they are the people who keep writing to the last day even if they know they will only end up with 25,000 words. The people who quit now will have a few thousand words of a story they hate. Of a story that was never given a chance, and will probably never be given that chance because of the bad memories it conjures. The feeling of failure.

But it will get better, I promise you. You’ll push through. You’ll write a few hundred words today. Tomorrow, maybe a thousand. Steadily your word count will climb, even if it never hits that magic number. You’ll find a scene you enjoy. Your characters will save the cat. A NPC will pop out of nowhere with just the thing needed to save the plot. There will be a budding romance, or friendship, or hatred and it will capture your attention, and then you will find yourself wanting to write more. That song on the radio – you know the one – will remind you of your novel and the words will start flowing again. You’ll get, as my mother-in-law calls it, your “suck-in” wind when you take a deep breath, remind yourself why you are doing this, and continue on with a new, calm resolve.

The craziness of the first few days is over. There where-do-I-go-from-here is behind you. All that looms now is the story you are telling, and the time you have to tell it in. Happy Noveling.

NaNoWriMo Day 9

Well, as you can see by the widget on my sidebar I’m not caught up yet, but I am feeling better about NaNo. I became a little worried this weekend when I still hadn’t made 1667 a day – never mind catching up – but I seem to have found a steady writing rhythm again, even if it’s not a particularly quick one. Part of the problem is that I never intended to write this story as a NaNo Novel – I always planned to take my time with it. The other part of the problem is that I really wanted to finish editing Fie Eoin because I now have a small mob of people gnashing their teeth for the next chapter. And the third part is that I didn’t really care about Sean. And that was really killing my writing.

You see, I storylined straight through this book and into the sequel, and in the sequel Sean is a horrible person. He blames the Forgetters for what happens at the end of Book of Souls (which I can’t spoil for you, obviously) and goes on a complete killing rampage. So the only Sean I’ve ever known is confused little boy Sean that goes straight into murderous rampage Sean. I had a vague idea who he was in his last life, but I never really explored that until NaNo started. So I started off the month with a POV character that I didn’t care about, but who was vital to the story.

What do you know, that doesn’t really work for me. So I went back to his last life and figured out what happened. And Sean was not a bad guy in his last life – he was actually a pretty decent fellow who had a horrible death. And he’s a pretty decent guy as a confused kid, too. And then last night he told a little lie to someone in charge of the army and the Rebecca in me fell in love. Now, instead of forcing myself to write his scenes I actually want to. I want to see what’s next for this kid between horrible death and eventual murderer. I want to know what really makes him tick. I care.

Do you care about your characters? Finding that “save the cat” moment may be just what you need to get your NaNo butt in gear.

And don’t forget to visit the others in the NaNo Blogchain! Their sage wisdom (and lamentations!) sure helped me out on Day 4 when I felt like giving up.

NaNoWriMo Day…only Four?

I have to admit that I’m not feeling NaNo this year. I’ve got an awesome story that I really want to write, I’ve got awesome minions to help me with my ML duties, and I’ve got a great bunch of excited Wrimos to cheer me up whenever I see them. But I’m exhausted. I’ve been doing non-stop NaNo-duties since the end of August (when my first presentation was given) and I’ve barely had time to see my husband since October started (this is partly due to the fact that work has him traveling a lot right now, but also due to NaNo). I’ve already got a new ML lined up for next year and I want to just hand over the reins today and be done with it.

But then who would take care of the calendar? And the ML emails? And handing out stickers at events? (which, by the way I’ve already run out of – I gave away 50 stickers and blue books in five days! When I started MLing two years ago we had four people total at the write-ins!) Who would answer the questions? (my minions are actually really awesome at getting to the questions right away) Who would be the smiley, bubbly, not gonna take your shit this year, fearless leader? Who really, deep down inside kinda freaking loves being ML and is going to miss the hell out of it next year?

Who almost fell asleep at a red light on the way to the write-in yesterday and needed a night off?

So you know what? I typed up the handwritten stuff from Days Two and Three, poured myself a glass of wine, and watched the last five episodes of Community, which I have missed for over a month because I’ve been so busy with NaNo. Some of the episodes sucked (really? Space capsule from KFC?) but some of them were well worth it (Abed Jesus? Hilarious). And although my notebook and pen were on the table beside me I didn’t even look at them once. I posted my 153 words for the day to the website and I smiled at the new stats area that said “1 unsuccessful day”. Because honestly? I’d consider this a pretty successful day. I had lunch with my husband at my favorite restaurant, I met with my boss to start in a new area of the lab (now I get to play with radioactivity AND fire!), and I caught up on a show that is not my favorite but made me laugh.

Now I’m going to go to bed and wake up on Day Five ready to write again. I gave myself a little cushion the first few days and I can take a day off. I needed to take a day off. It’s been a lovely day off.

The point is: don’t let NaNo overwhelm you – writing an entire book is overwhelming enough as it is.

Sticky #61

Well guys, NaNo has officially started in some parts of the world, and is only two hours away from starting here in Charleston, SC! And as a NaNo Eve Treat (no Tricks here!) I’ve decided to upload one final sticky before the writing craziness starts. And even better? It’s from this year’s NaNo Novel, Book of Souls.

Imagine if you could remember hating the people in your last life that you were born to in this one? It would probably make you a little bitter about life. Probably make you angry. And probably make you the antagonist in my NaNo Novel :)   I love my antagonists – from Pike in Fie Eoin to the Manticore in Phooka Tales to Eros in Apollo and Daphne, a good antagonist can make or break a book. If your antagonist can’t get your protagonist off their butt and doing things then you don’t have a book. Please don’t neglect your antagonist while you are waxing poetic about your awesome protagonist this November!

And speaking of awesome, I received my first Blog Award today! Margo over at Writing at High Altitude has given me my choice of five awards, and I’ve chosen The Beautiful Blogger Award (it goes with my white/simple theme the best). You should certainly go check out her blog – she’s got the greatest posts on characters and newly released books!

You should also go check out “This is How I Get It Done” at www.doycetesterman.com – the inspiration for the NaNoWriMo Blogchain!

See you all once the madness of NaNo has started. Happy Noveling!

NaNo Prep

Back when I was a practicing Wiccan (it didn’t stick, I really sucked at being a witch. I really suck at being anything with a set practice of rituals) I read in a book on Wiccan rituals that the circle started well before calling the corners and lighting the candles. It started when you got into the mind set. It started in the preparations. And it’s the same way for NaNo. Wrimos love November because they finally get to start writing, but I love October. I love the preparation and the anticipation. I love getting in the mind set of writing like a maniac.

One of my Wiccan friends told me that she uses a certain CD to get in the mind set for a ritual. Her ritual starts when she turns on the CD and begins to prepare for the circle. And her brain is now hard-wired to get into that mind set whenever she hears those songs, even if it’s the middle of a random Tuesday. So I tried that, and it worked. To this day when I hear the Prologue to “The Book of Secrets”, by Loreena McKennit, I am immediately put in the frame of mind of the ritual. And I can do the same for my writing. “The Mystic’s Dream” or “All Souls Night” (also Loreena McKennit) puts me right into Fie Eoin, wherever I am. Most of Loreena’s songs put me in Fie Eoin. Mat Kearney conjures up Apollo and his crew. “Come Alive” by the Foo Fighters makes me think of Holly and the Manticore, or Karigan and Bar depending on my mood. Many Dave Matthews songs make me think of Rebecca and Lane. And “What I Wouldn’t Do” by A Fine Frenzy or “St Stephen’s Cross” by Vienna Teng makes me think of Neona and Book of Souls.

It’s a convenient little trick, using music to put you in the right frame of mind. When I want to work on Fie Eoin – no matter what I’m doing – I can turn on the playlist and I’m there, ready to listen to Kindra and Kaye. And when I’m planning Book of Souls this month and writing it next month I’ll play A Fine Frenzy, Vienna Teng, and the Avatar soundtrack (I happened to be storylining BoS when I first listened to the soundtrack, so instead of reminding me of the movie it now puts me straight into Neona’s world. Unfortunately the CD doesn’t work in my car or on my work computer :/).

What about you? Do you have any rituals to prepare and get yourself in the writing mind frame? Are there any albums or songs that remind you of your characters and your worlds?

Don’t forget to visit the other Wrimos in the blogchain and find out how they prepare for NaNoWriMo!

Book of Souls

So, I’ve been teasing you guys with the Top Secret Project for a while (almost a year) as I flesh it out and learn more about the characters. I’m ready to start writing finally, so I’ve decided to make it this year’s NaNo Project. And its name is Book of Souls.

I still can’t tell you a whole lot about the story, because it’s high concept and I don’t want anyone stealing it, but I can give you a general idea of what the book is about. It’s set in a world where reincarnation is the main belief and soul-bonds are the strongest relationships. As I mentioned in my last post, there is no such thing as marriage in this world. There is the soul-bond, which is your relationship with the person you feel most connected to in life – whether that be your best friend, your sibling, your parent, or your mate – and there is your mate, who is there for the purpose of having children. You can dissolve a mating pair quite easily unless that person is your soul-bond (it wouldn’t do to tell your bond that you don’t want to mate with them anymore!), but it’s very difficult to dissolve a soul-bond, as the MCs soon figure out.

The technology is Renaissance and the Library is most important building in the center of the city, taking the place of the church. They do believe in God, but they believe in knowledge more. The city my characters start out in is Bruges, Belgium, with all of its canals and townhouses, and the city they end up in is Alethia (totally made up), on the banks of the Lethia River (also totally made up, but not by me). On the other side of the city is the Forgetter Territory, and the people on this side of the river are known as Rememberers. At 13 years old every Rememberer has their memories opened to them, and that’s where we’ll start off.

Neona and Sean are the POV characters (Neona would be considered the Main Character, but Sean gets his POV sometimes too, because halfway through Neona…well…let’s just say her POV turns into a jumbled mess and it would be un-readable). Nea’s best friend is Alicia, and she’ll be leaving her soul-bond behind to go on a crazy adventure to Alethia with the other two. And that’s about all I can tell you without giving away a good majority of the plot, and what makes this story so unique.
