Stop writing fluff!

I’m just going to take a moment to smile here, because you guys know how I am. Last week (*coughs* let’s just pretend it was only a week ago) I talked about writing fluff, and how important it actually was. And true to form it appears that I will be able to use not only some of that fluff, but just about all of it. Not bad for two weeks of writing nothing but fluff.

But now I’ve made Chapter 5 even longer, and there are parts that don’t work with the new stuff, and it’s a much bigger mess than it used to be. It’s kind of like cleaning out a closet – you have to pull everything out and make a complete mess before you can trash some things and put everything else back together very nicely. But to do that I need to stop throwing things in my closet (that reminds me, I also need to clean my closet…). I need to stop writing fluff.

It’s time to get back to work.

Luckily, taking that time out to write fluff helped me get back into work mode. I’ve freshened up a chapter that I had nearly beaten to death with a new character and a new motivation for the older characters. Kindra’s got a pretty new sword and has tried to kill a man because he kissed her while she was holding it. Gar’s finally decided that he’s not taking no for an answer. Monk’s having fun laughing at them both. And the new guy left the kissing scene with his life intact, but only because the sword was already sheathed. There’s a little more conflict, a little more internal struggle, and a little more growth. And now it’s time to polish it up and make it shine.

I can do that now. In fact, I really want to do that now. What about you, did you write anything just for fun this past week? Did it re-energize your passion for writing? Is it time to get back to work?
