You guys, I have just been blown away by a plot twist.
As in, I’m having trouble thinking of anything else, because the sheer awesomeness of this plot twist is overshadowing everything else.
In fact, the Hunger Games series has kept me guessing right from the beginning. Every time I think I know what’s going to happen, something else entirely happens. I only got one thing right, but didn’t even come to it in the same direction as the author. And now I’m wondering, hopelessly, how to do this in my own novels. How do I think of every possible direction and then choose a different one? How do I think of the answer that no one else has thought of? How do I make a plot twist that will blow everyone else away?
I don’t know. I wish I did. It would be easier, for sure, if I wrote all my books in first person POV. But even then – how do you think of that one thing that no one else has thought of? How do you put a red herring in that is that good? The only other book that’s ever done this to me is The Night Villa by Carole Goodman. I thought I thought of every possible person as the bad guy in that book, and it turns out the villain was right under my nose the whole time. I had no idea. I was probably more surprised than the main character.
Have you ever come across a book with a plot twist so good that it blew your mind?
